San Basilio de Palenque was founded by the African slaves who fled to regain their freedom during colonial times, being the first free people in America in the 17th century. Founded by Benkos Bioho (1603).
Isolation has allowed them to preserve their culture in traditions such as food, dance, social organization and language. This small population due to its unique characteristics in its history, formation, culture and language was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
