SAN BASILIO DE PALENQUE AFRICAN HERITAGE
San Basilio de Palenque was founded by the African slaves who fled to regain their freedom during colonial times, being the first free people in America in the 17th century. Founded by Benkos Bioho (1603).
Isolation has allowed them to preserve their culture in traditions such as food, dance, social organization and language. This small population due to its unique characteristics in its history, formation, culture and language was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
Come with us and in the company of a local guide visit the village learning about its history, culture, musical rhythms. Enjoy a dance performance and you will understand why San Basilio de Palenque is the center of Afro-Colombian music.
